Mohamed Abdillaahi Abdirahmaan is the Head of Maintenance in the Water Production Department at the Hargeisa Water Agency, with over 5 years' experience in electromechanical engineering. He holds a B.Sc. in Electrical Power and Electronics Engineering and diplomas in related fields. Skilled in managing electrical systems, machinery, and renewable energy, he oversees maintenance, troubleshooting, and system optimization. He played a key role in the Hore-Haadlay Medium Voltage Line expansion project, improving the water supply's efficiency.
Water Production
Overview
The Hargeisa Water Agency is committed to ensuring a reliable and sustainable supply of water for the residents of Hargeisa. Our water production processes are crucial to this commitment, and we continually invest in infrastructure and technology to enhance our capabilities.
Our Production Capacity
- Currently, the Hargeisa Water Agency's water production capabilities have significantly increased.
- Prior to the water expansion project, our daily water production was 6500 cubic meters.
- After the first phase of the Hargeisa Water Expansion Project, this capacity more than quadrupled to 26000 cubic meters per day.
- This expansion included the construction of a new water production facility, which is three times more powerful than the old one.
- We have also developed new wells and pipelines to transport water to storage reservoirs.
Key Infrastructure
- A primary feeder pipe, 23 km long with a diameter of 600mm, connects the water production facilities at Geedeeble to storage facilities within the city.
- We are currently working on the second phase of the Hargeisa water expansion project, which includes laying down 166 km of pipes and constructing four large service reservoirs.
Technology and Monitoring
- We utilize state-of-the-art digital instrumentation to monitor water production across borehole sites.
- This system provides real-time data on the operational status of wells, allowing engineers to quickly identify and address any issues.
- SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems are used to aggregate data and provide a comprehensive overview of water production.
- We also employ remote control capabilities to adjust pump settings and optimize extraction efficiencies.
Sustainability Initiatives
- The Hargeisa Water Agency is actively working to reduce its reliance on diesel power.
- Currently, some of our wells use solar panels during the day, supplemented by diesel generators at night.
- Our goal is to increase the use of solar energy to power at least 50% of our operations in the near future.
Quality Control
- The Hargeisa Water Agency has a dedicated water quality laboratory that conducts testing to ensure that the water we provide meets international standards.
Ongoing Projects
- We are continuously working on expanding and improving our water production and distribution network to meet the growing needs of Hargeisa.
- Current projects include the Hargeisa Water Supply Project, in partnership with the KFW Development Bank of Germany, with construction scheduled to begin in March 2025.
Achievements
- The Hargeisa Water Agency fully funded and completed the Kalqoray Dam, the largest dam in Somaliland.
- This dam is expected to improve the condition of underwater reservoirs at Geedeeble.
- The agency has doubled the number of households with running water.
