Located north of Hargeisa, Geed Deeble district has long served as the vital backbone of the city’s water supply. The community of Geed Deeble has generously shared its land and natural resources to ensure clean water for Hargeisa's population of over one million. On Tuesday, January 6th, 2026, the Hargeisa Water Agency (HWA) hosted a groundbreaking ceremony to lay the foundation for a new high school in the district. This project is part of the HWA’s ongoing commitment to improving local infrastructure and honoring the people of Geed Deeble for their unwavering support and contributions to the capital’s residents. The ceremony was attended by a distinguished group of stakeholders, including cabinet members, government officials, intellectuals, and community elders.
The speakers were unanimous in their praise for the project, emphasizing that the school’s value extends far beyond the present, promising a profound generational impact. General Manager Mohamed Ali Daarood highlighted the hardships faced by local youth due to the lack of secondary education in the area. He noted that children are often forced to move away from their families to Hargeisa, a transition that, in many cases, leads to the interruption of their studies or total withdrawal from school.
Drawing on her extensive experience, the former Minister of Education and Finance, H.E. Samsam Abdi Aden, urged the Agency to look beyond the physical structure. She stressed that "the most critical factor will be ensuring quality educators" as this element is the true determinant of the children's future. Accepting this challenge, General Manager Daarood reaffirmed the HWA’s commitment to sustainability. He assured those present that the Agency would not only complete the construction but would also provide essential equipment, robust administration, and a faculty of highly qualified educators.
Furthermore, General Manager Daarood called upon the people of Geed Deeble to entrust the agency with their children’s future by prioritizing their enrollment in the new school. Supporting this sentiment, the Minister of Education, Ismail Duaale Yusuf, remarked, “Our mission is to extend our reach to underserved areas, particularly to our farming and pastoralist communities.” He further encouraged the community to broaden their horizons, stating, “I urge you not to limit your children only to traditional farming, but to provide them the opportunity this school offers.”
It is also noteworthy that H.E. President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro has welcomed and officially approved the project. The President pledged that the central government will continue to invest in initiatives aimed at enhancing the livelihoods of the Geed Deeble community. Underscoring this commitment, the Minister of Civil Aviation and Airports Development, Fuad Ahmed Nuh, noted: “This region is more than just a water supplier for the capital; it holds profound historical significance, having provided sanctuary to refugees fleeing the atrocities of the dictatorial Barre regime.” He added, “Speaking for the administration, this school represents the first of many projects promised by President Irro.”
This sentiment was echoed by other cabinet members and most notably by the former First Lady, H.E. Amina Waris Mohamed Jirde, who remarked, “It is the government’s obligation to reward the people of Geed Deeble. It is truly admirable, and I am grateful to General Manager Daarood and the current administration for this recognition.”
In conclusion, the groundbreaking ceremony marks a transformative chapter for Geed Deeble, symbolizing a shift from mere resource extraction to genuine community investment. By laying the foundation of this high school, the Hargeisa Water Agency(HWA) and the central government have signaled that the region’s historical sacrifices and ongoing contributions are finally being met with the development they deserve. As construction begins, the project stands as a testament to the power of gratitude, education, and the enduring partnership between the capital and the people who sustain it.
